About The River Church

Trinity Gospel Tabernacle was born out of the era of tent revival meetings. Every summer, Nortonville had at least one tent revival. These revivals went on for weeks. The crowds were large every night and many gave their hearts to the Lord. It was not unusual to see people walking in from the streets and make their way to an altar. The new converts wanted a place to worship God. Church services were held in the Nortonville Theatre for a short time. God placed a desire on Rev. Henry Stevens' heart to build a church building.

On  September 23, 1946, a lot was purchased to build a new church. The church was to be a Non-Denominational Tabernacle, so that people of all denominations would be free to worship God together. The purchase price of the lot was $150.00. The building was completed in 1948. The first elected pastor was the Rev. Luther Teague. (B& W photo pictured below.)

Under the leadership of Pastor James Gunn, a new sanctuary was erected. The old church was used for Sunday School rooms and a fellowship hall. Pastor Gunn's vision for the building included a large wheel chair ramp. He wanted to see people wheeled in and healed by the power of God so they could walk out. The new sanctuary dedication service was June 6, 1976.

Pastors Howard and Joanne Jones became the pastors in 1987. The name of the church was shortened to T.G.T. due to the length of the name. The church grew and a decision was made to build a larger building. The Lord sent provision.

On the morning of March 23, 2003, the congregation met at the Main Street building. A caravan of vehicles traveled to the new 21,000 square foot church building. While the church name, The River, had been used at the old building, the name of Trinity Gospel Tabernacle was changed to The River at this time. In the Bible, the names of places and people were changed to reflect their purpose.

Just like in the early tent revival days, the desire of those at The River is to see many saved and come together in worship. We believe that the reason we have expanded is for a great Outpouring of Grace in our communities. The 900 seat facility has been utilized for events for the kingdom as well as a place of healing, restoration, and salvation for many.

The River has experienced many movements of the Lord. We have been home for pastors needing healing and for people recovering from wounds and even life controlling issues.
